Have you ever felt betrayed by someone close? Maybe it was a sibling, a close friend, or team member…

Betrayal can feel and look like a bunch of different things.

It can be getting a rumor started about you, getting cheated on, getting conspired against, or getting thrown in a pit.

That is what happened to Joseph. Joseph (not the adopted father of Jesus) was the son of Israel and had eleven other brothers.

Joseph was a nice enough kid, and was the youngest which made him the baby of the family. He was spoiled and the other brothers hated it. Also, like a little brother he couldn’t keep his mouth shut.

He kept having weird dreams that pointed to him one day being the leader of his family, which wouldn’t have been so bad if he didn’t mention it to his brothers!

Soon they conspired to kill him, “Let’s kill him and throw his body into one of the pits. Then we can tell everyone a wild animal killed and devoured him. We’ll see then what becomes of his stupid dreams.”[1] Fortunately for Joseph they decided to throw him in a pit instead and sell him into slavery (not really so fortunate).

The thing to note about their betrayal of their brother is it really wasn’t about Joseph. They were jealous because their dad picked a favorite and it wasn’t them.

Often times when we are betrayed by those around us we take it personally. We think what did I do wrong to deserve this? When they truth is often times it isn’t even about us!

They cheated, stole, lied, or whatever because they have some issues they need to work out.

So if you have recently been screwed over by someone spend some time today thinking over why that person might have done what he did, because the odds are you really aren’t the reason.
